Earwax Removal Cambridge

Using the latest otoscope technology, we will examine and photograph the inside of your ear to determine the best course of action. Should you need your earwax to be removed, we will use one or more of the following techniques:

Microsuction Earwax Removal

Microsuction is a safe and comfortable method of ear wax removal. A low pressure pump, attached to a fine, sterile probe, gently sucks earwax from the ear canal. Microsuction is useful when irrigation is not possible – e.g. where there is a perforated ear drum or grommets, water in the ear canal could enter the inner ear and cause problems, so microsuction is a much safer option.

Water Irrigation to Remove Earwax

Warm water irrigation can be a successful method of earwax removal as it can help to coax the earwax forward. It works via a gentle, controlled low pressure water jet, which is angled gently towards the wall of the ear canal.

Manual Earwax Removal

With the aid of a specula, our clinician can use a variety of sterile tools to remove stubborn, hard to remove earwax blockages (these could occur due to the shape of the ear canal).

Frequently Asked Questions About Earwax Removal

What do I need to do before my appointment?

We will ask you to complete a consent form that will supply us with the information we need to ensure that you have a safe and successful visit.

Its important that we know what medication you are taking, so bringing along your latest prescription is ideal.

Please purchase, on line or over the counter a medical grade olive oil, such as Earol olive oil spray which is the best and most gentle way to lubricate the ears in advance of treatment. We ask that you do not use any of the chemical solutions on the market, as they may make your condition worse.

Use three drops in each ear, three times a day for at least three days (ideally five days) before your treatment date.

Should you have ear hair, please arrange to get this trimmed or visit a barber, so that we can clearly see inside your ear.  If we can’t actually see clearly into your ear, we may have to delay your treatment as it may not be safe to proceed.

How do I know I may have a build up of wax?

One or more of the following common symptoms, could be a sign that you have a build-up of ear wax; You may experience earache, pain and discomfort, and/or a reduction in general hearing. Your voice may sound different to you and the sounds of eating and drinking may be more loud than usual.

The pressure in your inner ear may also be effected by the build-up of ear wax, which may cause any of the following side effects; light headedness, your balance may feel off, unexplained falls, cognitive ability is not as sharp as it normally is.

Why Does Earwax Build Up?

Earwax is naturally produced in the ear to keeping the ear canal lubricated and trap dirt. For many people, earwax will naturally disperse.

Earwax can build up due to glands producing more earwax than usual, increased skin shedding, or the tiny hairs within the ear trapping the exit of earwax in the normal way.

We inherit the shape of your ear canal, so this may hinder the natural exit of ear wax.

Age, the use of hearing aids, music ear buds or sleep ear buds can also influence the build-up of wax, and its natural exit from the ears.

Using cotton buds to ‘clean’ your ear canal can push earwax further into the inner ear.

What Will You Do If You See Something Wrong With My Ears?

We take a photograph at the start of the consultation and following ear wax removal. Should we detect anything of concern, we will supply you with the photographs to take to your GP so that they can take any necessary action.

This can considerably speed up diagnosis and referral, as they have the photographic evidence to hand.
