Biomechanical / MSK Assessment

Types of MSK Assessments
At Cutting Edge Podiatry in Cambridge we offer two types of biomechanical assessments; a traditional MSK assessment and 3D Gait Analysis using cutting edge technology developed at Oxford University.
Hosted in our modern 3D gait analysis lab in Cambridge, Run3D and Walk3D are the GOLD STANDARD of gait and musculoskeletal analysis.

Why You May Need a Biomechanical Assessment
If you suffer from pain in your hips, knees, feet, or leg, a biomechanical assessment can identify your unique combination of underlying issues – the first step to getting you back on the road to pain-free activity – vital for both physical and mental health.
Gait analysis using Run3D and Walk3D can also help with injury prevention and running performance.

How Do Run3D and Walk 3D Gait Analysis Work?
Using the latest infrared-based motion analysis technology, Run3D captures your 3D joint angles in real-time as you walk or run on a treadmill – using small reflective markers attached to your legs and shoes.
The infrared cameras measure the position of these markers 200 times per second to build an accurate 3D model of you walking or running – and help identify the root cause of any injury or pain.
This data-driven approach enables our podiatrists to optimise your rehabilitation with precisely targeted treatment and advice.
The technology can also monitor the outcome of interventions and assess progress over time. It can instantly measure the impact of different footwear, for example, gait retraining or surgical intervention.
What Happens When Gavin from Cambridge 105 Tries Run3D?
In September, Gavin from Cambridge 105 visited Cutting Edge Podiatry to try out our Run 3D gait analysis. He chatted with Suvanne throughout his experience live on air. You can listen to the recordings or read the transcripts by clicking here.
What Can I Expect at a Run3D or Walk3D Gait Analysis Appointment?
Wear shorts and trainers (not walking boots) for your Run3D or Walk3D session. If you wear orthotics, bring them with you so that you can be assessed with and without them – to ensure they are doing their job.
Once the reflective markers have been fitted, you will be asked to walk or run on the treadmill. You will have time to get used to the equipment before we start capturing how you move.
Run3D and Walk3D accurately measure the movements of your hips, pelvis, knees and ankles and compares your results to a database of uninjured controls in real time. This allows immediate identification of any asymmetry and abnormal patterns in your gait.
Combining the results of these tests with your gait analysis gives us all the information we need to understand how and why your body is moving the way it is.
The results of your assessment will be used to provide a data-driven rehabilitation programme that is specific to your individual needs. A treatment plan will be recommended to help you recover from injury or maintain mobility and delay the progression of chronic conditions.

Traditional MSK Assessment Option
Our traditional MSK / bio-mechanical assessment is ideal for those who cannot manage to go on the treadmill due to limited mobility. This 1 hour assessment will be completed without Run3D to gain a prescription for bespoke orthotics.
