Poderm Method for Fungal Nails

poderm method for fungal nails

Developed in Switzerland and new to the UK, we are the first podiatry clinic in the UK to offer the Poderm Method for Fungal Nails. So if you are looking for effective fungal nail treatment in Cambridge, look no further!

Poderm Fungal Nail Treatment

Nail fungus (also called onychomycosis) is a common infection that affects the look and health of your nails. It often causes the nail to turn yellow, thicken, or lift away from the skin. It is important to treat fungal toenails promptly, as they will progressively worsen without treatment.

The Poderm Method is a professional, ongoing treatment plan for fungal toenails. It works best when treating 1-3 affected nails where the nail base itself is not compromised. It is not intended for infections that have spread along the entire nail.

This method combines in-clinic treatments with specialist Poderm serums used at home. This combined approach has highly effective results. Poderm products and treatment methods are available at Cutting Edge Podiatry in Cambridge.

The Poderm Method for Fungal Nails

The Poderm Method is not a one-off treatment. It is a staged plan built around two elements: what happens in the clinic, and what you do at home. Both are necessary for success. The Poderm Method involves the following steps to treat fungal nails:

1. Initial Appointment – 60 Minutes

Your first appointment begins with a full assessment of your fungal toenails. Your podiatrist will explain the Poderm Method, go through consent, and take clinical photos so we can monitor progress.

A high-speed dental drill is used to clean away the fungal-affected nail, and any part of the nail that has already lifted or separated from the nail bed is trimmed back to the healthy portion. This is painless and opens the nail up so that active ingredients can actually reach the site of the infection, rather than sitting on top of a hardened, damaged nail surface.

At your appointment, you will also receive the following items:

  • Poderm Fungal Nails Serum to eliminate fungus (containing approximately 300 applications)
  • Poderm Booster Serum to speed up healing
  • A toe cap (if appropriate) to promote nail regrowth and protect the nail from shocks
  • Products to treat Athlete’s Foot, including a footwear spray

2. Ongoing Treatment at Home

At home, you will follow a structured routine using Poderm’s serums to support regeneration. You will typically:

  • Apply Poderm Fungal Nails Serum twice a day.
  • Apply Poderm Booster Serum twice a week (and a night oil for added effect).
  • Wear the toe cap, if appropriate.

Consistency is essential. Following the plan maximises the effectiveness of the treatment.

3. Follow-Up Appointments – Every 6 Weeks

For the Poderm Method to be effective, follow-up appointments are required every six weeks.

During these appointments:

  • Any new thickened or infected nail is gently reduced.
  • The nail is prepared again to support serum absorption.
  • Updated progress photos are taken.
  • Further guidance is provided.

Appointments last up to 30 minutes.

Since toenails grow slowly, complete regrowth of a clear nail can take up to 12 months, so the overall length of treatment depends on how severe the infection was to start with.

Additional home care products can be purchased if needed. Poderm colour care, breathable nail polish, is available at the clinic. This allows the active ingredients to keep working underneath.

Why Choose The Poderm Method

Visible results from the first visit.

Because the treatment physically removes fungal debris and damaged nail during the appointment, the nail’s appearance often improves immediately, rather than patients waiting months to see any change.

Non-invasive and essentially painless.

There’s no surgery, no oral medication, and the debridement itself doesn’t hurt because it’s performed on a nail that’s already separated from the nail bed.

No systemic medication involved.

Because it’s a topical, in-clinic approach rather than a tablet, it avoids the drug interaction and organ-toxicity concerns that come with oral antifungals.

Structured, supervised follow-up.

The six-weekly review appointments mean progress is actively monitored and the approach adjusted, rather than a patient being left to apply a cream alone for months without checking whether it’s working.

Limitations of The Poderm Method

The Poderm Method is a lengthy commitment. Patient adherence over many months is essential. It is limited to milder presentations -It’s best suited to 1–3 affected nails with the nail base intact; more extensive infection isn’t a good candidate for this approach.

Extra Add-On Treatments are Available

As part of your fungal nail treatment programme, we also offer additional services to improve the cosmetic appearance of your nail and support the best possible results. The following are available, if required.

1. Nail Reconstruction (Onychoplasty)

If part or all of your toenail has been damaged by fungal infection, we can reconstruct it to restore the appearance of a natural, healthy nail. Poderm varnish can be applied over the reconstructed nail throughout your treatment programme. Nail reconstruction can usually begin from your second appointment onwards.

Nail reconstruction for up to two toenails requires an additional 30-minute appointment. In most cases, reconstructed nails stay in place for the duration of treatment, unless affected by trauma.

Read more about toenail reconstruction here, and check here for current pricing.

2. Toenail Bracing (Orthonyxia)

To complement the Poderm Method and support healthy nail regrowth, a toenail brace may be recommended.

A small, specialised brace is applied to gently lift the sides away from the skin, helping to relieve pressure and guide the nail to grow into a healthier shape over time. This is a non-surgical treatment.

Nail bracing for up to two toenails requires an additional 30-minute appointment. The brace typically lasts 8–12 weeks depending on nail growth and may need repositioning as the nail grows out.

How long does it take to treat nail fungus & how long should I use the Serum?

It depends on how bad it is and how fast your nail grows. You’ll usually see a difference in 6 to 12 weeks, but it can take a few months for the nail to fully grow back healthy. Sticking to the treatment every day is really important.

You might notice improvement from the very first application of Poderm Fungal Nail Serum, but it’s important to keep using it until the nail has fully grown out. This takes time – usually 1 to 4 months for fingernails and 6 to 12 months for toenails. Sticking with it is key to full recovery.

Is Poderm Fungal Nail Serum natural?

Yes, all PODERM® treatments are are made with naturally derived ingredients and don’t contain harsh chemicals. This includes the nail serum which is 100% natural. Poderm products are tested by skin and foot care experts, and are gentle enough for sensitive skin, children, pregnant women*, and people with diabetes*.

Should I apply the Poderm serum to all nails, even the healthy-looking ones?

Yes, it’s a good idea to apply the Poderm Fungal Nail Serum to all your nails – even the ones that look normal – to help prevent the fungus from spreading. Don’t worry, using the same bottle won’t cause any cross-contamination.

How many applications are in one bottle of Poderm Fungal Nail Serum?

Each bottle of Poderm Fungal Nail Serum contains around 300 applications – enough for about 4 months of regular use.

Can nail fungus come back?

Yes, it can – especially if you stop treatment too soon or if your feet stay in warm, damp conditions like sweaty socks or tight shoes. That’s why PODERM also has preventive care products to help keep your nails strong and protected once they’ve healed.

Can I still wear closed shoes during treatment?

Yes, you can – just try to wear breathable shoes, keep your socks clean by washing them regularly, and avoid damp or sweaty conditions for too long. Keeping things clean and dry helps stop the fungus from coming back.
