Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Cambridge
At Cutting Edge Podiatry in Cambridge, diagnostic ultrasound can help identify the cause of pain quickly, allowing more accurate diagnosis and treatment planning
What Is Diagnostic Musculoskeletal Ultrasound?
Musculoskeletal ultrasound, also known as diagnostic MSK ultrasound, is an advanced imaging technique used to assess muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, and other soft tissues. Using high-frequency sound waves, it creates detailed images beneath the skin without the use of radiation, making it a safe and painless diagnostic tool.
During the scan, a handheld ultrasound probe is moved across the affected area, producing instant images on a screen. Unlike many other imaging methods, musculoskeletal ultrasound provides live, real-time imaging, allowing your clinician to assess structures both at rest and during movement.
Benefits of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound
One of the main advantages of diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound is that results can often be reviewed immediately during your appointment. The scan provides real-time imaging, allowing structures to be assessed during movement as well as at rest.
Musculoskeletal ultrasound is non-invasive, comfortable, and does not use radiation.
Conditions That Can Be Assessed With MSK Ultrasound
Musculoskeletal ultrasound is commonly used to investigate a wide range of lower limb and sports-related injuries. It can help identify tendon injuries, ligament damage, muscle tears, inflammation, and other musculoskeletal conditions affecting the feet, ankles, legs, and lower limbs, including achilles tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis, ankle ligament injuries, heel pain, joint swelling, soft tissue injuries, and repetitive strain injuries.
How Diagnostic Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Supports Treatment
Ultrasound can reveal problems that may not be apparent during a standard physical examination, helping to confirm a diagnosis, rule out other potential causes of symptoms, and support a treatment plan tailored to your specific condition. It can also be used to support ultrasound-guided injection therapy, allowing the exact treatment area to be identified and injections to be delivered with greater accuracy.
If required, we can provide a formal diagnostic ultrasound report for your GP, consultant, physiotherapist, or other healthcare professional. This can support onward referrals, further investigations, and treatment planning where appropriate.
