K-Laser Therapy

Discover the power of K-Laser Therapy for your foot pain and fungal and verrucae infections. We are one of a limited number of clinics that offer K-Laser treatment in Cambridgeshire.

What is K-Laser Therapy

K-Laser therapy is a non-invasive treatment method that uses specific wavelengths of light to help promote healing and alleviate pain in various foot and ankle conditions. It is also known as Class IV laser therapy.

During a K-Laser therapy session, your podiatrist will apply a hand-held device, emitting a high-powered laser beam of light directly to the affected foot or ankle area. The energy from the laser stimulates cellular metabolism and increases blood flow, which helps to reduce inflammation and promote tissue repair. The treatment itself is painless, and most patients feel only a mild warming or tingling sensation.

K-Laser therapy is commonly used to treat a range of foot and ankle conditions, including plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, neuropathy, and arthritis. It can also be used to promote healing after foot and ankle surgery, fungal infections, and several other conditions.

The treatment is considered safe and effective and typically requires a series of sessions for optimal results.

How does it work? The science bit:

K-Laser,  a state-of-the-art Class IV laser therapy, has been found to penetrate and initiate healing on a cellular level, allowing some clients to return to normal activities with little or no pain.

K-Laser, also known as High Power Laser Therapy, targets damaged tissue with specific wavelengths of light that have been found to interact with tissue and accelerate the healing process.

Much like photosynthesis in plants, light energy passes through the skin, into the cell membrane initiating a process called photobiostimulation.

What is the result?

The photobiostimulation process enhances the body’s natural regenerative functions, as well as stimulating the release of endorphins and collagen. The energy penetrates deeper into musculoskeletal tissues and accelerates cell metabolism by increasing blood flow, nutrient absorption, cell division and removal of waste products.

This results in accelerated wound healing, as well as reduced pains, stress, swelling and spasms. As the injured area returns to normal, the function is restored, so clients can start to return to activities and hobbies.

The Therapeutic Effects of K-Laser Treatment

1. Increased Metabolic Activity

By stimulating key molecules (haemoglobin, water cytochrome c)
K-Laser therapy improves tissue oxygenation, ATP synthesis and intercellular exchanges, activating a cascade of photo-chemical reactions that speeds the healing, regenerative process.

2. Improved Cellular Activity

K-Laser therapy induces vasodilation in the treated area and promotes angiogenesis, thus improving the blood circulation, optimising tissue nutrition and removal of cell waste and inflammatory factors. K-laser stimulates the lymphatic drainage system as well. As a result, there is a reduction in swelling caused by bruising or local inflammation.

3. Anti Inflammation

Laser therapy accelerates the termination of the inflammation process. Interleukin-1, a cytokine that has immune and pro-inflammatory actions, is proven to be reduced by laser treatment, and the antioxidant Super Oxide Dismutase (SOD) levels are enhanced, helping reduce damaging free-radical activity.

4. Improved Nerve Function

Laser therapy is proven to facilitate the normalisation of nerve signal transmission in the autonomic, sensory, and motor neural pathways. Both Compound Muscle Action Potential (CAMP) and Nerve Latency values show improvement following laser treatment. It is also proven to stimulate axonal sprouting and cell regeneration in damaged nerves.

5. Analgesic Effect: reduce chronic pain

Pain relief is the result of nerve activity alteration, reduced localised inflammation and swelling, proven to happen following a K-Laser therapy course.

6. Accelerated Tissue Repair and Cell Growth

K-Laser wavelengths, power and pulse frequencies penetrate at depth into tissues and accurate cellular reproduction and growth by increasing their metabolism. As a result, the cells of tendons, ligaments, muscles and bones are repaired faster.

7. Reduced Fibrous Tissue Formation

Early K-Laser Therapy can prevent the accumulation of scar tissue following tears, burns or surgery. Once healed the tissues are proven to be more elastic with minimal scarring, reducing the onset of chronic pain associated with scars.

8. Immunoregulation

9. Faster Wound Healing

Success Stories of Laser Fungal Nail Treatment

“A pain free approach to the problem with no side effects. I had three laser treatments and 8 weeks later I had clear nail growth. 6 months later and my nails are totally clear. I can’t thank Deborah enough. I am so happy that I have finally got rid of this embarrassing issue.”

“I couldn’t rate Cutting Edge Podiatry highly enough. The team offers very helpful, practical advice and is clearly very passionate, and experienced, around the topic of podiatry. In my experience fungal infection laser treatment is worth the investment, not least because it fast tracked the curing and recovery processes.

As with any effective treatment plan patients should also be prepared to invest time and commitment to the cause in addition to the financial investment. Curing fungal infection certainly doesn’t happen overnight, it could take a year, and then preventative action could be ongoing. It can take a lot of effort and self-discipline to realise the cure but given how reliant we are on mobility, and our feet, I would certainly recommend investing in a regular treatment schedule with Cutting Edge Podiatry. The benefits are clear to see, and it feels good to cure, and preserve, such an important part of our body. Based on my experience, investing in Cutting Edge Podiatry would certainly be a good idea, especially if you’re a middle-aged man or woman.”

“A few months ago due to balance issues I had a bad fall  damaging my hands and knees . My thumbs were, very swollen, black, blue , extremely swollen and painful.

I suffer particularly with osteoarthritis in my knees and fingers, especially my thumbs.

I told Suvanne about it and she said that with her  K Laser she could probably help me with the pain, increasing the range of motion and accelerating healing.

I decided to try it as the Physio had given me exercises but they were too painful to do. Over the next few weeks I had two appointments a week. I had treatment on hands and knees  and was totally amazed at how quickly the bruising and swelling went down, but also how the pain had subsided in both hands and knees.

Now I m on a maintenance programme of once fortnightly.

Thank you so much, a truly wonderful machine and for your patience and advise concerning ongoing exercises to keep mobile.”

“Having cartwheeled a motorbike and sustaining a Grade III acromioclavicular joint separation – ‘A complete separation of the joint. The acromioclavicular ligament, the coracoclavicular ligaments, and the capsule surrounding the joint are torn. Without any ligament support, the shoulder falls under the weight of the arm and the clavicle is pushed up, causing a bump on the shoulder.’

I was in severe pain and unable to perform any normal movement of my left arm, wearing a sling 24 hours a day, and on a very high constant dose of pain medication, with an orthopaedic consultant’s prognosis of being unable to ride a motorbike for at least 3 months.

Suvanne immediately stated the K Laser could accelerate healing, reduce my pain, and get me living again which as I couldn’t even dress or wash myself, sounded like a miracle treatment!

I trust Suvanne’s clinical knowledge implicitly so leapt at the opportunity of trying the K Laser as nothing else was even an option for my injury including surgery.

We began with twice weekly treatments, and it became clear after a week or, so they were helping dramatically, the bruising, swelling, and pain reduced with each treatment.

We realised I also had far more range of motion than anyone had any hope of so quickly – I was at the physio’s 6-week stage by 3 ½ weeks post-accident and the improvement continued at such a pace I even rode my motorbike at 6 weeks. I was still in some pain of course but had stopped taking the pain medication and using the sling by 3 weeks – unheard of with such a serious injury apparently.

I did work at my rehab and physio between sessions but can absolutely recommend K Laser to any one with a musculoskeletal injury or issue, since we stopped treatments thinking it had done all it could for my recovery the pain has returned, and my range of motion has decreased so I am resuming treatments, having tried my physio’s Teka machine it cannot do what the K Laser can, it really is an incredible machine and I really don’t know how I would have coped without it’s treatment following my accident.

Thank you to Suvanne and Ivan for their care, patience, and guidance, you’ve done my shattered shoulder the world of good you really have.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any side effects or associated risks?

In over 20 years of use, few side effects have been reported. Occasionally some pain and discomfort can feel aggravated even more as the healing response is more active after treatment. This tends to last about 24-48 hours.

Is the K-Laser for me?

The K-Laser is suitable for any age group, skin tone, and body size. From athletes to pregnant women, from injured children to infirm elderly people, and from acute injuries to chronic conditions; the K-Laser protocols can be tailored to the specific individual.

It can also be used for long-term use to help control and manage conditions such as osteoarthritis as an alternative or in conjunction with ongoing medication.

What can I expect during treatment?

You will need to remove any clothing and jewellery from the treatment and surrounding areas. The treatment will be administered by a trained clinician using a hand held device about the size of a torch.

The K-Laser is placed directly over the affected area and the surrounding areas. Each protocol may take 30 seconds to 9 minutes and sometimes more than one protocol is used to the affected area and surrounding areas during the treatment period, depending on your treatment plan.

You may feel a warm sensation.  K-Laser is non-addictive.

When will I start to feel the benefit? How many sessions will I need?

Many clients report some benefit after only one or two treatments but most are able to resume daily activities with reduced pain after their therapy course is completed. Little and often is key to good healing.

Some acute conditions may benefit from daily sessions for 6 sessions. Chronic conditions may benefit from sessions 2-3 weekly for 3-5 weeks, eventually tapering to once weekly and then once monthly for ongoing chronic long-term conditions such as Osteoarthritis.

How long will the effects last?

There is usually a reduction in pain from the first 24-48 hours.

Acute cases, therapy is usually finished after the first treatment course is completed.

Chronic cases, therapy may need monthly sessions on an ongoing basis to maintain results.
